When did the fine art nude model appear?

A nude for a goddess, for a saint, for a painter's patient hand, for a pin-up, for a print magazine, and now for a machine. Where the nude model came from, and where she is going.

Try an experiment. Search “the best fine art nude models in the world” and see what comes back. You will get photographers. Page after page of the great names of the lens, and almost never the women who actually stood in the light. The nude is the oldest subject in art, and the person who gave it a body is the one history keeps forgetting to name.

So let us do the thing the search engines will not. Let us follow her, all the way back.

She began as a goddess

Around 360 BC, the sculptor Praxiteles carved the Aphrodite of Knidos, the first life-sized female nude in Greek art. The goddess had a model, and her name was Phryne, a celebrated courtesan and, by most accounts, the sculptor’s lover. So the very first fine art nude model in the Western tradition was a real, named woman standing in for a goddess. And here is the part that should sound familiar: the city of Kos, offered the statue first, recoiled at her nakedness and refused it. The neighboring city of Knidos took her instead, and she became one of the ancient world’s great tourist attractions. The nude was born scandalous, and it was born on a real woman’s body.

She sat for the saints

Here is the paradox at the heart of it. The same naked body that scandalized the temple also built it. The masters of the Renaissance studied living nude models to carve their saints, their Christs, and their heavens, the holy figure raised from a real, breathing, unclothed person standing in a cold studio. Michelangelo’s most sacred marble began as someone with no clothes on, holding a pose until the muscles shook. The nude has always been how art reaches for the divine, even when the church would rather not say whose body it borrowed.

The life room

For centuries after, she went quiet and nameless. When the first true art academy opened in Florence in 1563, drawing from the live nude model became the foundation of learning to see. But the life room was a men’s club, in every sense. Female models were considered too indecent for the classroom for generations, so the early nude study leaned on male bodies and on goddesses painted from imagination. When women were finally allowed in, they arrived anonymous, a body rented by the hour, credited as “model” if they were credited at all.

The painting that said her name

Then in 1863 a red-haired model named Victorine Meurent lay across a canvas and looked straight out at Paris, unashamed, and the city lost its mind. The painting was Manet’s Olympia. The scandal was never the nudity, art had been nude for two thousand years. The scandal was that she was clearly a real, specific woman meeting your eye as an equal. Victorine was no passive object either. She exhibited her own paintings at the Paris Salon, sometimes in the very years she posed. The muse, it turned out, was an artist.

The camera arrives, and so does the argument

Photography changed everything, and it started exactly where you would expect: in the service of painters. In the 1840s and 50s the earliest nude photographs were made as reference studies, an academie, cheaper and more accurate than hiring a live model for weeks. Eugene Durieu shot nude studies that Eugene Delacroix painted directly from. But the moment a nude could be printed and sold, the oldest question in this art form was born with it. Felix-Jacques Moulin made his nudes under the cover of “academic study” and still landed in legal trouble for indecency as his prints slipped into the underground market. Art or obscenity, study or scandal. That argument is as old as the photograph itself, and we are still having it.

The muse becomes the star

By the twentieth century a few models stopped being subjects and became legends. Kiki de Montparnasse, born Alice Prin, sat for Man Ray, Modigliani, Foujita, Kertesz and half the Paris avant-garde, was turned into a violin in one of the most famous photographs ever made, and then held her own solo painting exhibition in 1927. She did not serve the scene. She was the scene.

There was a second, more democratic bloodline too. In 1895 the illustrator Charles Dana Gibson drew the Gibson Girl, the feminine ideal walked off the easel and onto the calendar, and the “calendar girls” became the first pin-ups. The nude in art had seeped so far into everyday life by then that even Charlie Chaplin’s Tramp would stop to admire a nude statue in a shop window, playing the artistic connoisseur for a laugh. By the 1950s Bettie Page carried the pin-up from drawing into photography and became one of the most photographed women who ever lived, and a spark that helped light the whole modern movement. The academy gave the model prestige and anonymity. The pin-up gave her fame and no respect. High art remembered the work and forgot the woman. Popular art remembered the woman and dismissed the work. Today’s fine art nude model is the child of both.

Then came the provocateurs who fused the two. Helmut Newton spent fifty-six years with his wife and first muse June, made Charlotte Rampling a legend after a 1973 shoot, and in 1980 began the Big Nudes, black and white, monumental, the model no longer reclining for the viewer but standing over him, powerful and entirely in control. The nude had stopped being something done to her. It had become something she did.

Where we are

Which brings us to a strange present. The muse has never been more visible and never been more erased. There are more working art models today than at any point in history, a global community of extraordinary artists. And yet try to find them. Instagram suppressed its own fineartmodel and artmodel hashtags, penalizing the very people keeping the tradition alive, and a centuries-old art form drifted toward the paywall, onto OnlyFans and its cousins, where the body pays rent but the artistry goes uncredited. The muse who scandalized a nation in 1863 by having a name is, in 2026, anonymous again. A body the algorithm would rather you did not see.

That is exactly why we name ours. Every model in our pages is a co-author, not a caption. It is also why we built a page just for them.

Where it is going

So where does she go from here? Two doors are open.

Through one, she takes the byline back. The creative economy is letting the model become the author, the director, the brand, the muse of her own work. One of the muses on our own Featured Models page, Laetitia Bouffard-Roupe, a French fine art model and former ballet dancer who has posed for hundreds of photographers across dozens of countries, now sits down and writes the story herself, in her own words, right here on Substack. The muse has picked up the pen. Be your own muse, as another of ours puts it, and mean it.

Through the other door, she vanishes into a sentence. The newest “models” were never born and never posed. Lil Miquela has millions of followers and a record deal. Aitana Lopez earns a fortune for a Spanish agency and has never drawn a breath. The virtual nude is already here, a woman built from a prompt, always on brand, never tired, never paid, never real. We have been thinking about that one a great deal lately, and we will have much more to say soon.

From Phryne standing in for a goddess to a goddess with no one standing in at all. Twenty-four centuries, and the nude is still art’s way of asking what a human being is. The model has always been the answer. The only question left is whether we will remember her name.
